The Manley ELOP is a stereo electro-optical limiter inspired by the classic LA-2A, 3A and 4A units but designed and built from the ground up.

The ELOP Stereo Electro-Optical Tube Limiter from Manley Labs is a two-channel leveling amplifier that produces instantaneous gain reduction with no increase in harmonic distortion. The limiter features an all-tube channel path, custom-wound transformers and dedicated high-pass filter. At the heart of the ELOP Limiter, lies an LED shining on to a light-dependent resistor (LDR). This photo resistor works with a fixed resistor to function as voltage divider to attenuate the signal based on the brightness of the LED, resulting in smooth, natural compression characteristics. Manley Labs have devised their own vactrol technology that tracks the audio with sample accuracy, but with no high-frequency loss; a problem often associated with other photo-optical limiters.

The interface features control knobs for gain reduction and make-up gain on each channel. The two large, illuminated VU meters with toggle switches allow for monitoring gain reduction and main output levels. The ELOP Limiter is excellent for tracking voice and individual instruments offering a smooth response, much like a smart volume control. For bass heavy music, the dedicated side-chain high-pass filter will tell the limiter to ignore low-frequency signals. This allows the limiter to focus on the entire frequency range and not react to just the heavy bass signals.
