The Teletronix LA-2A is a tube-amplified optical compressor, famous for providing smooth, balanced and warm compression. The LA-2A is one of the most favorable compressors for vocal applications as it creates even dynamics without producing unwanted audio bi-products and has a wide array of applications including bass guitar and certain drum applications.
The LA-2A was originally created by Teletronix before the patented technology was purchased by Universal Audio. This unit is renowned for its smooth, musical and natural sounding compression, obtained by a combined circuitry of tube-amplification and an electo-optical attenuator in what has been called a T4 Cell.
The LA-2A has a Limit/Compress switch that alters the compression ratio, and the VU [link] meter can also be switched to show either gain reduction or the output level. It also provides gain reduction without creating harmonic distortion or unwanted audio artefacts, while still being capable of delivering desirable distortion and other compression effects when pushed to harder limits.
