The Tube-Tech CL 1B is an all-tube optical mono compressor boasting a distinctively musical and smooth style of compression which excels in mixing applications.
Released in 1987 by Tube-Tech founder John G. Peterson, the CL 1B is an optical, all-tube based compressor featuring a variable ratio, threshold, attack and release settings.
In use, the CL1B produces warm, smooth and transparent tones with a distinctive ‘popping’ sound usually associated with the initial transient shaping - the CL1B adds a distinctive thump which makes the sound feel more in-your-face. The unit has therefore found popularity within the hip-hop and urban/pop genres where it is constantly being used on vocals. Reputable users include Kanye West, Jay Z and Frank Ocean.
The CL1B gain-reduction element, positioned right after the input transformer, is controlled by the sidechain amplifier which contains two distinct time control circuits – offering 3 different options for attack and release settings: fixed, manual or combined. The CL1B also allows the linking of multiple units together by way of a dedicated Bus selector switch on the front panel.
When pushed harder, the CL1B retains its character and adds a subtle layer of valve saturation, characterizing the unit as a contemporary unit of vintage descent, but with a modern sound. Since its introduction, the Tube-Tech CL 1B has been used by the likes of Lionel Richie, Mary J Blige, Jennifer Lopez, Pharell Williams, Justin Bieber and Rihanna amongst many others.
