The TASCAM 58 and 58-OB were TASCAM's first +4dB multitrack recorders specifically targeted to music production professionals. The units were introduced in 1983.

The Tascam 58 was the company's attempt to enter the professional audio market by targeting recording studios and post production facilities across the world. The machine, introduced in 1983, provides recording and playback for 8 channels of audio at a fixed rate of 15 ips or 38 cm/sec. The model 58 tape machine allows for synchronization to the SMPTE standard and ensures stable tape motion and alignment even after prolonged running time.
